Finally, a Hazing Movie that Confronts Frat Bros For Despicable Behavior. The first, super slo mo shot sets the tribal tone frat bros, shirtless and wild eyed, scream and smile in a ritualistic half circle. The tribe hangs. They chill. And, oh god, do they partyin hormone rattled montages of bro hugs and one night stands, kegs and legs. But this isnt a good time its a nightmare. Goatset in world of frats on Clemson Universitys campus, to which the writer transferred following a brutal physical assaultwhich premiered at Sundance on Friday night. Its an arty film that a frat guy might actually watchand it will likely push hazing back into public conversation, thanks to a breakout caliber Ben Schnetzer as Brad and a rock solid, revelatory Nick Jonas as the older brother, Brett. But if Goat the memoir were just an anti fraternity screed, it might never shake off the after school special vibe. About a third of the way into the film, theres even a cameo by James Franco as the worlds worst frat boy alumnus the middle aged alpha bro, returning to his native habitat. He challenges Schnetzner to punch him in the stomach and slap his face. This goes on for a while, in a scene the director later said was entirely Francos improvisation. The films party monster raging and sup bros offer up a necessary answer to the question that hangs over every story of hazing abuse Why dont these pledges quit You might not like these brothers, but you get what makes them brothers. Felicity Season 4 Episode 17 more. You feel why they cling to each other, and why their bond makes them feel so powerful. Advertisement Continue Reading Below. That bond makes the rest of this brutal film tolerable, since it is, essentially, an unmitigated nightmare of Hell Week and hazing, involving duct tape and buckets of shit and piss. The actual hazing is gruesomeand the manipulation is as much psychological as it is physical, reminiscent of last years similar story of cool white guys gone power mad drama, Stanford Prison Experiment. Before long, youre thinking that Miles Teller in Whiplash didnt have it all that bad. Astutely, the film dispenses with the memoirs airy stream of consciousness. Theres no narration, no on screen epiphany, and, thankfully, no scene in which a wise elder tells a kidand the audiencewhats really going on. Theres not a heroic ending because this is not a heroic movie. Instead, the final shot leaves you feeling queasy When you were eighteen, what would you have done to fit in At the post film Q A, director Andrew Neel said the film was about masculinity in crisisand noted that mens rates of addiction and violence dramatically outpace that of women. The films objectification of women felt intentional, particularly for a film produced by Christine Vachon and Pamela Kofflers Killer Films. Men dont discuss things very much, Neel said.
