Even if she ultimately fell victim to the pitfalls of fame, Whitney Houston understood it better than she often got credit for. At the end of Whitney Can I Be Me, a heartbreaking documentary from Kurt Courtney directors Nick Broomfield and Rudi Dolezal on her life and the paralyzing effects her career placed on it, we see a clip of the late singer being asked what she think she will be remembered for. Ever astute, Houston offers a response that proved prophetic. Daniel Jackson, Ph. D., is a fictional character in the military science fiction franchise Stargate, and one of the main characters of the series Stargate SG1. You know, probably doesnt really matter anyway because theyre gonna remember me how they wanna remember me, she answered, laughing. Broomfield and Dolezal have their own idea of Houston and what led to her untimely death at the age of 4. Whitney Can I Be Me isnt shy its hypothesis drives the narrative, sometimes to a fault. Over a shot of the Beverly Hills Hilton, where Houston died, a voiceover declares People say Whitney died from overdose from drugs. I know Whitney Houston actually died from a broken heart. That heart was probably broken in multiple ways. But it is Houstons inability to be with Robyn Crawfordher best friend, whom she was rumored to be romantically involved withthat the documentary suggests truly damned the singer, a woman aching to be her true self in an industry that demanded she be everything but in order to become the worlds first true Black global superstar. After all, it was when Crawford left the tour, and also Houstons life. While Houstons marriage to Bobby Brown was widely known and public, there were whispers about her relationship with Crawford. Ellin Lavar, Houstons former hairstylist and longtime friend, says I think she was bisexual. Robyn provided a safe place for herin that Whitney found safety and solace. So much so that journalist and friend Allison Samuels concluded that 1. Whitney. Robyn was the person keeping her together, and thats why the drugs became so important to her. That was the crutch she used to get over that. Even Brown echoes at least part of this sentiment I really feel that if Robyn was accepted into Whitneys life, Whitney would still be alive today. Whatever the relationship between Houston and Crawford really was, the latter was a true friend to the troubled singer. Houstons mother, Cissy, told Oprah in a 2. Crawford who told her about Whitneys drug issues as far back in the late 8. Yet Cissy never approved of her. When Oprah asked Cissy if her daughter was romantically involved with Crawford, she answered, I dont really know but said it would absolutely have bothered her if Whitney had been gay. Knowing that Houston and Crawfords rumored relationship would serve as the centerpiece for Whitney Can I Be Me, I was uneasy. Yes, many have assumed the two were more than friendsespecially after reading Crawfords gorgeous obituary for Esquirebut if Houston never shared this part of her life with us, do we have the right to dissect it now But Crawford appears in the documentary herself, and hearing her speak about Houston alleviates any concern its clear you are watching someone who really did love the celebrated vocalist. The Hollywood Reporter is your source for breaking news about Hollywood and entertainment, including movies, TV, reviews and industry blogs. Then theres the footage of Crawford sitting in the concert crowd, emphatically singing along to If I Told You. Recalling Houstons teen modeling days, Crawford describes Houstons humility. She would be on the cover of Seventeen and wouldnt even tell anybody, Robyn recalls. Showtime Full Forever Young Online Free' title='Showtime Full Forever Young Online Free' />Isnt that funny Crawford then describes her friend as strange, but the smile on her face belies even that gentle criticism. We learn that Crawford, the elder of the two, used to protect Houston from bullies at school. They would later share an apartment, and Crawford helped the fledgling star make career choices. Samuels recalls, Robyn totally disappeared. Im assuming they paid her off. I think it was understood that it had to be Bobby and Whitney and this family unit. But while forbidden love works well as a narrative device, Broomfield and Dolezal fail to recognize that no matter who Houston loved, as a Black woman in America, trying to be the first pop star of her kind, she had to grapple with multiple layers of resistance. As one confidante says, She changed history for us, and she paid the price for it. And the toll was far greater than just one close relationship. Her talent alone commanded stardom, but record executives wanted a Black pop icon who could appeal to white America. Several Arista Records representatives confirm in Whitney that they wanted her to play a role that of a non threatening, apolitical, always gracious princess. It was a staggering requirement to make of someone who had fled Newark after the 1. Black city. For her to become the first Black pop star and the most awarded female act of all time, she had to hold back all that she was. Advertisement Continue Reading Below. Another imposition on Houston, who, like many Black vocalists, began singing in the church, was to remove the soul from her vocalsto make her music sound less Black and more like Barbara Streisand. This did indeed net her hits, but also earned her censure the film revisits the the 1. Soul Train Awards, where she was notoriously booed by the predominantly Black crowd, an act that devastated her. Not only was Houston pressured to maintain this ideal and make herself more palatable to white audiences, but she was also under the scrutiny of her mother, who vicariously lived through her after failing in her own solo star pursuits, and wielded religion as a weapon, making her feel guilty about everything from divorce to, possibly, homosexuality. Houston was also sued by her father, whom she loved dearly, for 2. Of course, there was also Brownwhile he may have taken more than his fair share of the blame for substance abuse issues that started before he entered her life, he nonetheless once admitted to hitting her. While Whitney argues convincingly that Crawford was supremely important to Houston, it missteps in assuming one person alone could save her. Im not convinced that a Houston free of romantic restrictions would have suffered any less. For her to become the first Black pop star and the most awarded female act of all time, she had to hold back all that she was. She had to appease record executives, family members, spouses, and friends. There might not have been a Beyonc or a Rihanna without a Whitney, but what the ascent to stardom took from her was complex and, simply, unconscionable. As for her own thoughts, Houston did know how she wanted to be remembered, actually I just want people to remember me as a real nice person. Somebody who cared. Somebody who tried to do everybody righteously. Whitney was a queen. A profound talent whose voice is, was, and forever shall be unmatched. Im just sorry that wasnt enough for everyone else and that, in trying to please everyone else, her spirit was irreparably crushedyears before her life suddenly ended. Whitney Can I Be Me premieres on Friday, August 2. P. M. ETPT on Showtime. Daniel Jackson Stargate Wikipedia. Daniel Jackson, Ph. Daniels maternal grandfather and only living relative, Nick Ballard played by Jan Rube, was a noted Dutcharchaeologist and too busy to take the orphaned Jackson under his wing. Though placed in foster care, Daniel visited his grandfather in a mental institution until they had an argument over his failing career and Daniel left. Daniel became an archaeologist and linguist who speaks 2. English, Russian, German, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Egyptian, Goauld, Ancient, and Unas. In the 1. Stargate, the character of Daniel is introduced in a scene in which he is presenting a lecture at an academic seminar. However, he finds little acceptance there of his theory that the Pyramids of Giza are much older than they are thought to be. An aged woman named Catherine Langford approaches him to offer him a job deciphering the cover stones of a device found in Egypt. Jackson uses his knowledge of ancient Egyptian languages to make the device, named the Stargate, function. Jackson then travels with a team, led by Jack ONeill, through the Stargate, and they discover that it leads to the planet Abydos. Daniel meets, falls in love with, and marries a native woman, Shauri named Share in the TV series Stargate SG 1. After winning the battle to free the Abydonians from the System Lord. Ra, Daniel decides not to return to Earth with the rest of the team and to instead live the rest of his life learning about the culture and history of Abydos, with its culture based on that of ancient Egypt. Jack ONeill lies to his superiors, saying that Daniel Jackson is dead. In the television series Stargate SG 1, Daniels life changes when his wife and his brother in law are abducted and turned into hosts for the Goauld. Daniel joins the SG 1 team in hopes of rescuing them. Daniel is briefly reunited with Share, who had been made host to Apophis queen Amonet, in season 2s Secrets, when she temporarily controls her body while pregnant with the Harcesis child Shifu. Shortly after Tealc kills Share in season 3s Forever in a Day, Share gives Daniel information to find her child, reconfirms her love for him and asks him to forgive Tealc. Daniel remains a part of the team and later saves his brother in law Skaara from the Goauld Klorel in season 3s Pretense. In season 3s Maternal Instinct, Daniel discovers the Harcesis child on another planet and leaves him under the care of Oma Desala, a being of great power and wisdom. SG 1 meets Shifu again as a much older boy in season 4s Absolute Power. In the penultimate season 5 episode Meridian, Daniel is exposed to a lethal dose of radiation while attempting to fix a naqahdriah reactor on the planet Langara in the Nation State known as Kelowna. The Ancient, Oma Desala, guides Daniel to ascend to a higher plane of existence. The Kelownan scientist Jonas Quinn takes Daniels place on SG 1 during season 6, although the rest of the team find it hard to get over Daniels absence. Ascended Daniel visits ONeill and Tealc during times of crisis, but the laws of ascended beings forbid him to directly interfere, with his visits simply consisting of providing moral support to his old teammates as they face torturous experiences on their own. In the season 6 finale Full Circle, ascended Daniel seeks to aid SG 1 in defeating the plans of Anubis. Before Daniel can destroy Anubis, he is whisked away, but Oma helps Daniel by ascending the entire population of Abydos before Anubis destroys the planet. Daniel is discovered naked and without memory on the planet Vis Uban in the season 7 opener Fallen. Daniel rejoins SG 1 full time one episode later, and Jonas returns to his people. Daniel spends much of season 7 trying to tap into his Ascended memories of his time of Ascension and to find the Lost City of the Ancients. This leads to the discovery of the Ancient Outpost at Antarctica in the season 7 finale Lost City, contributing to the spin off Stargate Atlantis. Passion And Power Episode 16. After Daniels death at the hands of Repli. Carter in Reckoning Part 2, Oma Desala provides a path for Daniel to ascend in Threads, but Daniel is descended back to Earth naked to live on as a human, this time with full memory of what just happened to him. In the season 9 opener Avalon, Vala seeks out Daniel at Stargate Command SGC and prevents him from going to Atlantis. The discovery of an Ancient communication device transports their minds to a village in a distant galaxy where they make contact with the Ori. Vala and Daniel can return to Earth safely, but unintentionally bring the Ori threat to the Milky Way. After Vala is accidentally transported to the Ori galaxy in Beachhead, Daniel reunites with Vala aboard one of the invading Ori ships in the season 1. Flesh and Blood. 2. After their escape, Daniel speaks up in support of Valas request to join the SGC. With the ancient Merlins knowledge, Daniel builds the Sangraal in The Quest. Valas rapidly matured daughter Adria captures Daniel and turns him into an Ori Prior in The Shroud to convert the Tauri to the path of Origin, but Daniel returns to his normal self at the end of the episode. In Unending, the last episode of the series, SG 1 gets stuck in a time dilation field aboard the Earth ship Odyssey, and a romance between Vala and Daniel comes to fruition. Before the time dilation field is reversed after fifty years, erasing all linked memories in the process, Daniel and Vala express their feelings for each other.
